Such Russian handmade suits were traditional dress for Russian women in 18 - 19 centuries in Moscow region as a festive dress because of the long arms.
Peter the Great forbided the traditional costumes in the cities, that's why it was spread in Moscow region but NOT the city. The famous Russian expression "to work with unrolled arms" comes from this suit - that means "to work bad", "to be dressed with not working suit and try to do something".
The suit consists of 4 things:
- long red shirt with long arms, traditionally decorated in arms and neck,
- dark blue sarafan with the original back shape named "frog", traditionally decorated, without fastener,
- red apron, decorated with braid and fringe horizontally directed, and 7 crosses - the protection against the evil spirits - are handmade from beads,
- red kokoshnik (caped head-dress, decorated, with bow).
Suit is traditionally decorated with murals to protect a woman against the evil spirits - the 'frame' around the neck to protect the head and the neck, the vertical line - to protect the stomach, and the bottom horisontal line - to protect the legs.
This dress has been made in Moscow according to 18-19 centuries "fashion". Many hand-work!!! This could be a very good gift to Russian dancer or history lover, balalaika player, or just as unusual decoration!
