HOUSE ON CHICKEN LEGS RUSSIAN FEDOSKINO BOX!

This beautiful box is made from paper mache and wonderfully painted by unknown Fedoskino master. The box is shaped as well-known Russian ferry-tail "house on chicken legs", so, the roof could be opened, it's well lacquered. The space all around the picture is filled with bizarre gold tracery. Such caskets are very suitable for keeping any small things: jewelry, money, cigarettes, needles, buttons etc.

GENERAL INFORMATION:
Nowadays there are four main centers of lacquer art production in Russia. They are Fedoskino, Palekh, Mstera, and Kholui. Each of these centers is named after the small village in which they are located. Each of them has its own art school and factory.

The Fedoskino lacquer miniature developed separately from icon painting, and as such has several unique qualities. The most remarkable is that it's the only village to paint with oils, instead of egg-tempera. The Fedoskino artists also use mother-of-pearl and gold inlay much more extensively, and with rare exception, exclusively. The use of oils broadened the range of subjects the Fedoskino artists could cover, because it allows greater realism than egg-tempera.
